Endoscopy

Have you been experiencing discomfort after a meal? You may have started adjusting what you eat or eating less. Over time, these small changes can begin to affect your daily routine, even if the cause isn’t immediately clear.

With an endoscopy, your doctor can examine your digestive tract and identify any underlying conditions. Then you can plan the next steps in your care.

What Is Endoscopy?

An endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows us to examine your digestive tract using a thin, flexible tube with a small camera, known as an endoscope. This gives us a clear, real-time view of your oesophagus, stomach, or colon, and helps us identify possible causes of your symptoms.

Types of Endoscopy

In Singapore, different types of endoscopy are used to examine specific parts of the digestive tract, depending on your symptoms and what we need to assess.

  • This lets us examine the upper digestive tract, including the oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine.
  • Typically used to investigate ongoing discomfort after meals, acid reflux, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Helps us diagnose conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, and stomach or oesophageal cancer.

Colonoscopy

  • This lets us examine the lower digestive tract, including the colon and rectum.
  • Typically used to investigate changes in your bowel habits, persistent abdominal discomfort, or unexplained bleeding.
  • Helps us detect abnormalities such as inflammation, polyps, or cancer.
  • This procedure may also be used to remove polyps or collect tissue samples for further analysis.

Why Choose an HPB-focused surgical practice for Endoscopy?

Digestive symptoms like upper abdominal pain or bloating can sometimes be related to liver or gallbladder issues. As a specialist-focused HPB (hepato-pancreato-biliary) practice in Singapore, we look at the “big picture” of your digestive health, not just the stomach lining.

Indications for Endoscopy

We may recommend an endoscopy when your symptoms are ongoing, unclear, or require a closer look to determine the cause.

When We May Recommend a Gastroscopy (Upper Endoscopy)

A gastroscopy is ideal if you experience:

  • Persistent discomfort or pain after meals
  • Ongoing acid reflux or a burning sensation in your chest
  • A feeling that food is not passing smoothly or getting “stuck”
  • Frequent nausea, vomiting, or bloating that does not settle
  • Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite

A colonoscopy might be what you need if you notice:

  • Changes in your usual bowel habits, such as diarrhoea or constipation
  • Blood in your stool or rectal bleeding
  • Persistent lower abdominal discomfort or cramping
  • A feeling that your bowels do not empty completely
  • Unexplained weight loss or ongoing fatigue

A colonoscopy is also commonly recommended for colorectal cancer screening if you’re 50 years or older, even if you do not have symptoms. We may recommend screening earlier if you have:

  • A personal or family history of colorectal cancer
  • A personal or family history of colorectal polyps
  • A history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

In some cases, we may recommend endoscopy to:

  • Investigate findings from imaging or blood tests that require further evaluation
  • Take tissue samples (biopsies) for more detailed analysis
  • Monitor known digestive conditions over time
  • Assess the cause of unexplained bleeding within the digestive tract
Some digestive conditions require a detailed look to determine the cause.

Preparing for an Endoscopy

Preparing for your endoscopy in Singapore helps ensure we can examine your digestive tract clearly and carry out the procedure safely. We’ll provide specific instructions based on the type of endoscopy and your medical history.

Before a Gastroscopy

For a gastroscopy, we may ask you to:

  • Fast for at least 6 hours before the procedure so your stomach is empty
  • Avoid food and drinks during this period to allow a clear view of the upper digestive tract

Before a Colonoscopy

For a colonoscopy, we’ll guide you through bowel preparation to clear the colon for examination. This usually involves:

  • Taking a prescribed laxative the day before the procedure
  • Following a clear liquid diet (such as broth, tea, or sports drinks) and avoiding solid food
  • Expecting temporary effects such as bloating, cramping, or nausea during preparation

What Happens During an Endoscopy?

An endoscopy is typically a short procedure. During the examination, a thin, flexible scope is inserted through the mouth for a gastroscopy, or through the anus for a colonoscopy.

You may be given sedation to help you relax and remain comfortable throughout the procedure. This is typically discussed at your consultation.

While the scope is in place, we examine the lining of your digestive tract in real time and may take small tissue samples (biopsies) if needed.

What Happens After an Endoscopy?

After the procedure, we will monitor you for a short period as the sedation wears off. Most patients find the procedure tolerable, though some mild, temporary effects may occur.

You may notice:

  • After a gastroscopy: a sore throat, mild bloating, or belching
  • After a colonoscopy: a feeling of gas or abdominal discomfort due to air introduced during the procedure

We’ll usually review the initial findings with you after the procedure. If biopsies are taken, results are typically available within a few days.

Many patients are able to return to their usual activities the next day. You may feel slightly drowsy from the sedation, so it’s important to follow our instructions for a smooth recovery.
