The development of laparoscopic cholecystectomy technique is attributed to the dynamic medical industry, multiple technological enhancements, and improvements in the fields of surgery. Below are the two most common techniques of laparoscopic cholecystectomy:
Standard Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: This procedure is widely used by surgeons. In this method, 4 ports are used, two with 10mm cut and the other two with 5mm cut, to insert surgical instruments. The first 10mm cut is used to insert a telescope while the second 10mm cut is the surgeon’s main working port. For the 5mm ports, one is in the right lumbar region for the gallbladder fundus traction, whereas the other is used by the surgeon as the left hand working port. This technique is also named as 10-10-5-5 or 4 ports standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
Modified Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: This procedure is relatively less painful and cosmetically better compared to the standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy. With this procedure, the ports are either reduced in number or in size; for example, the length of the cuts (or incisions) can be reduced from 10mm to 5mm. Patients benefit from only 3 ports (instead of the usual 4 ports) with less pain and having a smaller 5 mm scars only.
Even the smallest surgery has its risks and complications, however, the below-mentioned complications caused by laparoscopic cholecystectomy are very uncommon and rarely occur when performed by experienced and trained surgeons.
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be performed by trained surgeons, even in difficult cases with large gallstones, previous gallbladder infection, or acute cholecystitis.
