An inguinal hernia can cause discomfort, and may even result in serious complications, if left untreated. Inguinal hernia refers to the protrusion of abdominal tissue from weakened abdominal muscles at the groin area. This can cause a bulge, which is painful in some cases.
The two common types of surgeries for inguinal hernia treatment are – the open repair surgery and laparoscopic repair surgery.
The open repair of inguinal hernia surgery also includes three types of surgeries. Depending on the situation or type of hernia, surgeons will decide which of the open repair surgeries are more suitable for the patient.
The laparoscopic repair surgery is the second treatment option for managing inguinal hernia; but it differs from the open repair surgery, as it involves a different technique.
In this procedure, a surgeon repairs the herniated region by making small incisions, through which a thin tube, tiny camera, and a mesh can be inserted. Then, internally the mesh is placed and fixed below the part that was herniated; without the need to make a large cut in your belly.
In experienced hands, the results of laparoscopic repair are similar to the results of open repair, with similar recurrence rates reported. However, the laparoscopic repair surgery is generally preferred in patients with a previous history of open repair surgery of the inguinal hernia as it avoids going through scarred tissues from previous surgery.
Inguinal hernia is a common condition, which needs surgical attention. Laparoscopic repair is suitable in the majority of cases, and allows quick patient recovery
